You win the game if you can secure more than 50% of the map for your castle. Therefore you should defend the largest areas first.
When you look at this map.
You see that there are three large areas.
Of these, A and B are threatened on one side by water, so easily defendable. C is threatened on three sides, so more difficult to hold.
Because water flows in ALL directions and wants to occupy the largest possible area...
A strategy like this may be your best option. Observe that the large areas are more or less secured.
